Garage door opener battery replacement: remote, keypad & backup.

If your remote quit or your opener won't stop beeping, it's almost always the battery — and it's usually a five-minute, ten-dollar fix you can do yourself. There are three different batteries it could be, so here's how to tell which one, exactly how to swap it, and when it's actually worth a call.

  • There are three different batteries in a modern garage door system: the remote coin cell, the keypad 9-volt, and the backup battery in the ceiling motor unit.
  • A dead remote or keypad is a cheap coin-cell or 9-volt swap — no tools, a couple of minutes.
  • An opener that beeps is usually telling you its backup battery is dying — not that the opener is broken.
  • Most of these fixes are $5–$70 in parts and need no service call, but we are happy to help if you need it.

Which battery does your opener actually use?

There are three separate batteries in a modern garage door system, and the fix depends on which one died: the remote usually takes a CR2032 coin cell, the keypad usually takes a 9-volt, and the backup battery inside the ceiling motor unit is typically a 12-volt sealed lead-acid pack.

Before you buy anything, figure out which one you're dealing with. Here's the quick breakdown:

You barely need any tools: a coin or small flathead screwdriver opens most remotes, and a Phillips screwdriver handles a keypad or the backup-battery cover. The good news is that all three are parts-only fixes — there's almost never a reason to pay for a service call just to change a battery.

Not sure which battery yours takes?

The exact size is printed on the old battery and, for remotes, often molded inside the compartment. Pop it open first and read it before you buy — remotes especially vary by model. A CR2032, CR2025 and CR2016 are all 20 mm across and look nearly identical, but they're 3.2 mm, 2.5 mm and 1.6 mm thick with very different capacities, so they aren't always interchangeable.

Opener beeping? That's usually the backup battery.

A garage door opener that beeps — often about every 30 seconds — is telling you its backup battery is dead or dying. It is not a sign the opener itself is broken. The small Battery Status LED on the motor unit tells you which state it's in.

Newer openers with a battery backup watch that battery's health and warn you two ways: a beep, and a dedicated battery light on the motor unit — a small status LED, not the opener's work lights.

What the Battery Status LED is telling you

What you see and hear What it means
Solid green Battery charged and healthy — nothing to do.
Flashing green Battery charging (normal after an outage or a fresh install).
Solid orange + a beep every ~2 seconds The opener is running on battery right now — you've lost household power. The door will move more slowly and the light won't come on. This is the backup doing its job.

Solid red + a beep every ~30 seconds Battery will no longer hold a charge. Replace it.

The fix for a low or failed battery is to replace the backup battery in the motor unit — jump to those steps below. Once the new battery is in, the beeping stops.

It might not be your opener at all

Before you climb a ladder: both LiftMaster and Chamberlain point out that a beep in the garage is often something else entirely — a smoke alarm, a carbon-monoxide alarm, or a water softener nearby. Unplug the opener for a minute. If the beeping continues, it was never the opener.

That's a different beep

A few other things beep, and they don't mean the battery:

  • Beeping plus a flashing light, then the door closes on its own — that's the required warning before an unattended close (from the myQ app, or Timer-to-Close). It's a safety feature doing what it's supposed to, not a battery fault. If you didn't mean to turn it on, it's a setting, not a repair.
  • Five flashes and five beeps — an obstruction or force fault. Something's in the way or the door is binding. Don't ignore this one.
  • Short 1-, 2- or 3-beep patterns during setup — Wi-Fi/myQ pairing feedback.

How to replace a garage door remote battery

Most garage door remotes use a single CR2032 coin battery and take about two minutes to change — no tools beyond a coin or small flathead to pop the case open.

  1. Find the seam or pry notch

    Look around the edge of the remote for a small slot, or a screw on the back. A visor remote often splits along its seam; a key fob usually has a notch for a coin.

  2. Open the case

    Twist a coin or small flathead screwdriver in the notch to pop it open, or remove the screw and lift the back off.

  3. Note the battery and remove it

    Check the number printed on top — usually CR2032, though some remotes take a CR2016 or CR2450. Slide or pry the old one out.

  4. Drop in the new one — positive side up

    Match the orientation: for a coin cell, the printed (+) side faces up, the same way the old one sat.

  5. Snap it shut and test

    Close the case, then stand clear of the door and press the button. It should respond in one smooth motion.

Fresh battery, still nothing?

If a new battery doesn't bring the remote back, the issue is usually pairing, not power — the remote needs to be re-programmed to the opener. See reprogramming, below.

How to replace a garage door keypad battery

Outdoor keypads almost always run on a single 9-volt battery — slide or unscrew the cover, swap it, and your code normally stays saved.

The wall-mounted keypad by your garage door takes a beating from heat and weather, so its battery is one of the first to go.

  1. Open the keypad cover

    Flip up or slide off the front cover. Many keypads have a small screw at the bottom; a few just snap open.

  2. Swap the battery

    Unclip the old 9-volt and snap in a fresh one. A few models differ — LiftMaster's 66LM takes a 12-volt A23, and the newest myQ smart keypads use a rechargeable pack you charge by USB instead. Match what you pull out.

  3. Close it and enter your code

    Snap the cover back on and enter your existing PIN.

Do you have to re-enter your code?

Normally no. Two different things are stored in two different places: the pairing between the keypad and the opener lives in the opener's memory, and your PIN lives in the keypad's memory. A battery change doesn't clear either one. If the keypad doesn't respond after a fresh battery, check for corroded contacts or a battery in backwards before assuming you need to reprogram it.

How to replace the opener's backup battery (the one in the ceiling unit)

The backup battery lives inside the motor unit on your ceiling and is usually a 12-volt sealed lead-acid pack. Replacing it means unplugging the opener, swapping the battery, and matching the wires by color. It's a straightforward swap if you're comfortable on a short step ladder working overhead — but if that's not your thing, we're happy to do it on a quick visit.

This is the battery behind a beeping opener. It's a bit more involved than a remote, but it's still a homeowner-friendly job that takes about ten minutes.

! Before you start — the manufacturer's own safety notes
  • Disconnect all electric and battery power before doing anything. Unplugging the opener is not enough on its own — the battery is a second power source.
  • Wear gloves and eye protection. It's a sealed lead-acid battery.
  • Never put a battery in a fire — it can explode.
  • Take off watches, rings and loose clothing before working near the motor.
  • Use the battery specified for your opener — not a generic substitute.
  1. Unplug the opener first

    Pull the opener's plug from the ceiling outlet before you open anything. The backup battery still holds a charge even with the unit unplugged, so work carefully.

  2. Find the battery compartment

    It's on the motor unit — usually behind a small access door on the side, or under the light lens. Pop the cover off (it may have a screw).

  3. Disconnect and remove the old battery

    Slide the battery out and unclip the two wires — on a LiftMaster or Chamberlain unit one is red (positive) and one is black (negative). They only reach their matching terminals, but it's worth remembering which is which.

  4. Fit the new battery, then connect it

    Slide the new pack in with its terminals facing out, then clip the red wire to the red/positive terminal and the black wire to the black/negative terminal.

  5. Close up and plug back in

    Replace the cover, plug the opener back into the ceiling outlet, and confirm the beeping has stopped. The Battery Status LED may flash green for a while as the new battery charges — that's normal.

Buying the right backup pack

The part number is printed on the old battery and in your manual. For most LiftMaster openers it's the 485LM (about $58 from LiftMaster); Chamberlain's equivalent is the 4228 (about $63). Aftermarket equivalents run cheaper. One thing to watch: retailers sometimes list the 485LM as an "EverCharge system" — it isn't a kit, it's just the replacement battery. The add-on kit was the older 475LM, which is discontinued. Some wall-mount openers use two 12-volt batteries wired in series instead of one.

! Recycle the old one, and the little ones too

The backup pack is a sealed lead-acid battery — don't put it in the trash. And in California this isn't just the big one: every battery is banned from household trash, including the coin cell out of your remote and the 9-volt out of your keypad. Take them to a household hazardous waste drop-off or a battery collection bin at most hardware and home-improvement stores.

The California rule, accurately

California Health & Safety Code § 19892 (added by SB 969) makes it illegal to manufacture for sale, sell, offer for sale, or install a residential garage door opener in California on or after July 1, 2019 unless it has a battery backup that keeps working during a power outage. The penalty is $1,000 per opener.

It does not require you to retrofit an opener that's already on your ceiling — those are grandfathered. But there's one catch worth knowing if you're replacing the door itself: since July 2019, a new door can't be connected to an existing opener that doesn't have a battery backup, regardless of how old that opener is. So a door replacement sometimes means an opener replacement too, and a reputable installer will tell you that up front.

If your opener was installed since mid-2019 it almost certainly has one of these packs — so replacing it every couple of years is just normal upkeep, not an optional add-on.

Do you have to reprogram the opener after changing the battery?

No — replacing a battery does not erase your remote's programming or your keypad code. If the remote still doesn't work after a fresh battery, the issue is pairing, not power, and you may need to re-program it.

Batteries supply power; they don't store the code that links your remote to the opener. That pairing lives in the opener's memory and survives a battery swap. The only thing that clears it is holding the opener's LEARN button until its light goes out — about six seconds — which erases every remote and keypad at once. A battery change can't do that.

When reprogramming is the answer is a different situation: a remote that was already losing range, got wet, or was knocked out of sync, and a fresh battery doesn't bring it back. In that case you re-pair it to the opener's learn button — the exact steps depend on your opener's brand and the color of its learn button.

Signs your garage door battery is dying (and how to make it last)

The classic signs are a remote that only works up close, a dim or unresponsive keypad, or a ceiling opener that's started beeping. Catch them early and you avoid getting stuck.

What to watch for, by battery:

  • Remote range shrinks — you have to be right at the door for it to respond.
  • The door obeys the wall button but not the remote — the opener's fine; the remote's battery (or pairing) is the problem.
  • Dim or slow keypad — backlight is faint or presses don't always register.
  • Beeping from the ceiling unit, and an orange or red Battery Status LED — the backup battery, as above.

To stretch battery life: keep remotes out of extreme heat and cold (a glovebox in a Sacramento summer is brutal on a coin cell), don't let a remote rattle around where a button can stay pressed, and pull the batteries from remotes you never use. If you're going to have the opener unplugged for a long stretch — a remodel, a long trip — disconnect the backup battery too, so it isn't slowly draining the whole time. None of it is dramatic — a few dollars every year or two is just the cost of a system that works on the first press.

What a dead backup battery actually costs you

Your opener still works on household power with a dead backup battery. What you lose is everything that depends on it — including the ability to get your car out during an outage.

The opener runs normally on household power. But leaving the battery dead has real costs beyond the beeping:

  • During a power outage, the door won't open on its own — which is the entire point of the backup. You're using the manual release in the dark.
  • You lose the smart features that ride on it — app control, connected accessories, the auto-close timer, and the automatic door lock, which unlocks and stays disabled until power comes back.
  • It beeps every 30 seconds until you deal with it. You can disconnect the battery to stop the noise, and that's a fine stopgap — but treat it as temporary. In California a battery backup is required equipment on any opener installed since July 2019, so "just unplug it permanently" isn't really an option.
  • If it still beeps with the battery completely disconnected, that's not the battery — that's the opener's logic board, and it needs a tech.

If a fresh battery didn't fix it

If you've put in a known-good battery and the remote, keypad, or opener still won't respond, the problem isn't the battery — it's usually pairing, the safety sensors, the logic board, or an opener that's reaching the end of its life.

Here's the short order to work through it:

  • Re-pair the remote to the opener's learn button. A remote that lost its sync acts dead even with a new battery.
  • Check the safety sensors if the door opens but won't close — that's almost always the photo-eyes, not a battery.
  • Look at the opener itself — grinding, humming-but-not-moving, or no response to anything points to the drive system or logic board. See what we do on openers.
