- Most opener failures are a dead battery, lost power, or a knocked-out safety sensor — not a dead motor. Check the cheap things first.
- A motor that spins freely without moving the door usually means a disengaged trolley or a stripped drive gear. A motor that makes a loud humming or is obviously straining could mean broken or improperly balanced springs.

- In our experience, openers commonly last 10–15 years on standard doors, but if you have an ultra heavy wood door or poorly balanced or broken springs, then this can significantly reduce your opener's lifespan. Budget openers often fail much more quickly as well.
- Cables, drums, and springs are dangerous to repair yourself. The springs do the majority of the work lifting your door and are under extreme tension — don't try to work on any part of the door that's connected to them.
What actually goes wrong with a garage door opener
Most "broken opener" calls come down to one of about seven things. The trick is telling a cheap fix (a battery, a sensor, a power glitch) apart from a real repair (a drive gear or logic board) before you spend money.
Here's what fails, roughly most-common first:
- Remote or keypad battery — the single most common "it stopped working." A dead coin cell, not a dead opener. How to replace it →
- Power — a tripped breaker, a switched-off outlet, or a GFCI that needs resetting.
- Safety sensors — the two photo-eyes near the floor. If their beam is broken, the door won't close. Learn more about safety sensors →
- Logic (circuit) board — the opener's brain. A power surge or age can take it out.
- Capacitor — a small part that gives the motor its starting kick. A failing one can make the motor hum without turning, but it's one of several causes of that symptom, not the only one.
- Drive gear or sprocket — the plastic gear that drives the chain or belt (screw-drive units use a rack instead). When it strips, the motor spins but the door doesn't move.
- Travel limits — the settings that tell the opener where "open" and "closed" are. Older and screw-drive units use mechanical limit switches; modern openers program the limits electronically. Either way, if they're off the door stops short or reverses.
One thing worth ruling out early: not every "opener problem" is the opener. A door that's too heavy to lift is usually a broken spring, and a door that won't close but opens fine is almost always the safety sensors — the opener is working perfectly and refusing to lower a door it thinks has something underneath it. Garage door opener not working? Find it by symptom.
The fastest way to diagnose an opener is by what it's doing — or not doing — when you press the button. Find your symptom below and start with the fix listed first; it's the most common cause.
Nothing happens — no lights, no motor
Start with power. Confirm the opener is plugged in, check that the outlet works (a GFCI or wall switch may have cut it), and look for a tripped breaker. If power's fine, unplug the unit for 60 seconds and plug it back in to reset the logic board — that clears a surprising number of dead-opener cases before you replace anything.
It opens but won't close (or reverses partway)
This is almost always the safety sensors, not the opener. The two photo-eyes near the floor stop the door if anything breaks their beam. Wipe both lenses, clear the beam path, and adjust the brackets until both indicator lights glow solid. If the sensors look fine and the opener flashes its lights ten times when you try to close, Chamberlain's diagnostic code for that is a sensor fault — obstructed, misaligned, disconnected, or a broken wire — so it's still worth checking the wiring back to the motor unit before assuming the board.
The wall button works but the remote or keypad doesn't
If the door responds to the wall control but not the remote, the opener is fine — it's the remote. Replace its battery, re-pair it to the learn button (see programming below), and check that the wall control's lock or vacation mode isn't switched on, which disables remotes on purpose.
The motor spins freely but the door doesn't move
Two causes. Most often the trolley (the carriage that connects the door to the rail) has been disengaged by the emergency-release cord. To reconnect it, Chamberlain's instruction is simply to run the opener — the trolley travels back toward the door and re-links on its own. (The release handle is for disconnecting; you don't need to force it back by hand.) If the trolley is connected and the motor still spins freely, the drive gear or sprocket is likely stripped — a common, fixable repair.
The motor hums or strains but nothing turns
This one is worth slowing down on, because the obvious answer is often the wrong one. It's easy to assume a humming motor means a dead motor, but Chamberlain's own troubleshooting for chain and belt drives lists seven possible causes: a broken spring, the door's manual lock being engaged, the trolley stuck against the stop bolt or stop tab, the door not connected to the opener, a capacitor fault, motor damage, or a failed logic board. Screw-drive units add a stripped rack; wall-mount units can have the collar slipping on the torsion bar.
Look up at the torsion spring above the door for a visible gap in the coil — that's a broken spring, and it means the door is unsafe to operate at all. Then check whether the door's own slide lock or latch has been thrown, which physically holds the door shut while the opener tries to pull. If neither is it, stop cycling the opener; running it against a jam or an unbalanced door is how a repair turns into a replacement.
It's grinding, screeching, or running loud
New noise usually means wear in the motor gears or drive system. A little routine noise is normal, but grinding or screeching is a warning — have it looked at before the gear strips completely and leaves your car stuck inside.

How to tell if your opener is going bad (vs. one bad part)
An opener that's genuinely failing gets noisy, slow, and intermittent — not just dead once. A single dead remote or a tripped sensor is a one-time fix; a pattern of problems means the unit itself is wearing out.
Signs the opener — not just a part — is on its way out:
- New grinding or rattling that gets worse over weeks.
- Slow or jerky travel — the door used to glide and now labors.
- Intermittent response — it works, then doesn't, with no clear pattern.
- Frequent resets — you're unplugging it or reprogramming remotes regularly to keep it going.
Repair or replace? How to decide.
Repair it if the broken part is inexpensive and the opener is otherwise in good shape. Replace it when an older unit needs a logic board or a motor — once you add the part, the labor, and the days spent waiting on a part that may not even be made anymore, you're most of the way to the price of a new opener.
Neither LiftMaster nor Chamberlain publishes an expected service life, so nobody can give you an official number. What we see in the field is 10 to 15 years on a standard door, and less if the door is unusually heavy or the springs are out of balance. How hard the door gets used matters more than the date on the label.
The easy calls are easy. A remote, a sensor pair, a capacitor, a drive gear — small parts, and an obvious yes to repair. Age on its own doesn't condemn an opener either: if a 14-year-old unit is in genuinely good shape and the problem is the belt or the chain, we'll replace the belt or the chain and you'll get years more out of it.
Where it tips is an older opener with an intermittent logic board — the kind that works fine for a week and then doesn't. That's the call where we'll usually say replace, and not because the board can't be swapped. It's that between waiting on the part, the price of the part, and the labor to fit it, you've spent most of what a new opener costs and you're still running a twelve-year-old machine with no fresh warranty behind it.
The thing to ask before you buy: are there parts at all?
Here's a key piece you should know: A lot of newer openers simply aren't built to be repaired. Several brands don't sell replacement components at all — so once the manufacturer's warranty is up, even a minor fault isn't a repair job, it's a new opener.
Often we see that someone buys an unfamiliar or budget-brand unit, it fails in year four, the warranty ran out in year three, and there is genuinely nothing any technician can do — the unit isn't unfixable because the fault is severe, it's unfixable because the parts don't exist. That's why we recommend LiftMaster openers rather than a budget model you get at a big box store.
If a single repair would cost more than about half the price of a new installed opener, replace it. And if the opener has needed two or three fixes in the last couple of years, the next one usually isn't the last — a new unit ends the cycle.

Programming a remote or keypad
Most LiftMaster and Chamberlain remotes pair the same way: press and release the learn button on the motor unit, then press your remote's button within about 30 seconds — the opener light blinks, or you'll hear two clicks, to confirm. A keypad starts with the same learn-button press.
The catch is finding the learn button and knowing its color. It's on the motor unit — usually on the back or side near the antenna wire, and on some models hidden behind the light lens, which pops off. The color tells you the opener's generation, which in turn decides which remotes and keypads will pair with it. Newest to oldest: white (Security+ 3.0), yellow, purple, red/orange, then green — green is the oldest and pre-dates rolling codes entirely. - Standard remote: press and release the learn button, then press the remote button within ~30 seconds.
- Keypad: press and release the opener's learn button first, then enter a 4-digit PIN of your choice on the keypad and press ENTER until the opener light blinks or you hear two clicks. On openers with an older-color learn button there's a longer set-up sequence on the keypad before that.
- Car (HomeLink): Chamberlain's instructions train the car's button from your handheld remote — hold the remote an inch or two from the HomeLink button and press both until the indicator changes from a slow flash to a rapid flash. Some openers need an extra step at the motor unit afterwards, and some older HomeLink versions need a compatibility bridge; HomeLink's own vehicle lookup tells you which applies to your car.
- New house: press and hold the learn button until its LED goes out (about 6 seconds) to erase every paired remote and keypad, then reprogram only the ones you're keeping.
To program a remote you tap the learn button once, then press the remote. Holding it until the LED goes out — roughly six seconds — does the opposite: it erases every remote and keypad paired to the opener. Mixing those two up is the most common programming mistake.
LiftMaster's newest generation is Security+ 3.0, which began shipping in late 2025 and replaces Security+ 2.0 (the yellow-button generation) on new residential openers. It still has a built-in learn button for remotes and keypads, but it uses a new encryption standard that locks out older and universal remotes — LiftMaster names the 893MAX and 890MAX remotes and the 877MAX and 877LM keypads as not compatible. The same troubleshooting applies across brands — LiftMaster, Chamberlain, Genie, Craftsman, and smart/myQ openers — with a few quirks worth knowing when you're programming or resetting one.
LiftMaster & Chamberlain
Same parent company (Chamberlain Group), so they share mechanisms, learn-button behavior, and myQ smartphone control. Anything that works on one generally works on the other — including the programming steps above.
Genie
Uses its own Intellicode rolling-code system and Safe-T-Beam sensors, and its programming button isn't called a learn button. On powerheads from about 2010 on, you hold PROGRAM/SET until the round LED turns blue, release, then press the remote button a couple of times to confirm. On Genie units from roughly 1995 to 2011 it's a LEARN CODE button with a red LED instead. The diagnostics — power, sensors, gears, board — are identical to any other brand.
Craftsman & smart openers
Many older (Sears-era) Craftsman openers were built by Chamberlain and program like one; newer Craftsman units can differ. Smart, myQ-equipped openers add app control on top of the standard remote and keypad.
Whatever the brand, exact learn-button colors and button sequences vary by model year — check the label inside the motor housing, or the manual for your specific model number. Replacing the opener battery
Two different batteries fail on a garage door opener: the small battery inside the remote or keypad, and the backup battery inside the motor unit on opener models that have one. They cause different symptoms.
- Remote/keypad battery — the usual "my remote stopped working." LiftMaster's own replacement part for its remotes is a 3V CR2032 coin cell; pop the case open, match what's in there, and re-test. If a fresh battery doesn't fix it, re-pair the remote before assuming it's broken.
- Backup battery — on units that have one, this is a plug-in pack inside the motor housing that runs the door through a power cut. It has its own battery status LED, separate from the opener's work light: solid green is charged, flashing green is charging, flashing orange is a low battery, and solid red with a beep every 30 seconds means the battery can no longer hold a charge and needs replacing. On LiftMaster units that part is the 485LM.
Before you buy a battery, work out what the beeping actually is. On a battery-backup opener, a beep every two seconds with a solid orange LED means the opener is running on battery because your AC power is out — the battery is doing its job. If the opener has the timer-to-close feature, Chamberlain says it beeps for eight seconds before the door closes and keeps beeping until it's fully shut; constant beeping means the door is closing on its own, which is a warning that it's about to move, not a battery fault. And Chamberlain's own support points out the culprit is often not the opener at all — a smoke alarm, carbon monoxide alarm or water softener nearby with a low battery sounds very similar. Match the beep pattern to the battery LED colour before spending anything.

Cables, drums, and why this one isn't a DIY job
If a lift cable has snapped or jumped off its drum, stop. The cables are under the same tension as the springs and can injure you — this is a professional repair, not a YouTube fix.
The cables run from the bottom of the door up to drums at the top of each side, and they work together with the springs to carry the door's weight. When a cable frays, snaps, or slips off its drum, you'll see the door hanging crooked, stuck, or a loose cable dangling. Because the system is loaded by the springs even when the door looks "down," trying to re-seat a cable yourself can release that stored energy suddenly.
Don't try to re-wind a drum or re-hang a cable yourself, and don't keep running the opener with a broken cable — it can pull the door further off-track. This is the same high-tension hardware as the springs, and it's the one area we firmly say is not a DIY repair.
Cables usually fail alongside or because of a spring problem, so it's worth reading how to tell if your spring is broken too — and keeping the door closed until it's looked at.
When to stop and call a pro
Call a professional if the motor grinds or hums but won't move, the door is heavy or strains, a cable has snapped, or you've reset and reprogrammed and it still won't run. Those point to the drive system, the logic board, or the door's hardware — repairs that need the right tools and tension experience.
The honest line: a lot of opener problems really are a dead battery, a bumped sensor, or a power glitch you can sort out yourself in a few minutes — and we'd rather you do that than pay for a service call you don't need. But there's a clear point where it stops being a DIY job: a stripped gear, a failed board, anything involving the cables or springs, or a fault you've chased without luck.
